Niraivagam Remedial Services 2018 - 2019

Don Bosco Institute of Psychological services established by the Salesians of Don Bosco is primarily engaged in providing Psycho-social services by way of counseling, remedial education, research training and Life-skills training. We started the remedial services at a small level in Ennore, under the leadership of Fr. Jeyaraj and now, this services has expanded its horizon of identifying and helping children with special needs, to several schools in Chennai.

The remedial program for academic year 2018-2019 started in June 2018. The students of 3rd to 5th grade were carefully assessed using the NIMHANS testing tool (adapted version) for specific learning difficulties, or through a simple assessment which helped the teachers to identify the children with difficulties in the areas of reading, spelling and writing in English, Tamil, and Math.

This was followed by awareness programs for parents about learning disabilities and the remedial classes in order that they may support their children and understand the process of remediating the learning difficulties. Then with the collaboration of the school management a time table was structured in such a way that these students will have parallel classes with the special educator, three or four times a week.

Periodic assessments and mid-year parents meetings were held to communicate the progress made by the students. The parents were met by the special educators also during the open days. The students were assessed at the end of every term and an individual report was generated at the close of the academic year, depicting the child’s area of progress and concerns, along with recommendations for the future. Niraivagam also organized summer coaching classes for 80 children of the schools. An overall support system was maintained in order to bring a balance between the Management , Staff and Parents, by enabling them to voice their needs and thus bringing a positive change in the life of every child.

The number of students benefitted in the Niraivagam Remedial program, as follows:

1. St. Gabriel’s Hr. Sec. School – 36 students
